Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and well-being.

Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals in a range of community settings and peoples’ homes, who provide support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work according to and may contribute to an individualised plan, and work without direct supervision. They may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.

  • Develop foundation knowledge and understanding to work effectively with people who have a Disability.
  • Develop skills in the day-to-day, hands-on support and care of clients when working for a Disability Care Provider
  • Carry out activities to maintain personal care and other activities of living for people with a Disability
  • Carry out activities related to an individualised plan or NDIS Care Plan
  • Work effectively with co-workers
  • Develop cultural awareness and respectful practices
  • Apply knowledge and skills gained through qualifications and / or previous experience to provide training and support to people with disabilities to enhance their ability to achieve greater levels of independence, self reliance and community participation
  • Report to service managers and may liaise with health professionals and other service agencies

G: I went to work in the Service Industry because I care about people.

D: I chose this course as I wanted to help the community.

S: The most that I was hoping to achieve out of being in the Community Services area was certainly to give back to the community.

G: I come from IT background and that’s dealing mainly with machines and it’s getting closer to people.

D: I actually have a background in retail but I wanted to change my career. This was the best time for me to do it as the kids have got an older

S: I was in Sales and Marketing and Customer Service for the last 35 years. And back in January, I was laid off my job.

DN: They’ve got to that situation.  Where, “What am I going to do?”  “I’ve been doing this for 30 years. What am I going to do now?”  All we can do is give them the options, give them me explanations that they made, give them the reassurance.  And then the decision is up to them. But I tell them.  They’ve got to have the passion for the industry.

JS: If I’m going to put my mother or my dad into care. If you are going to look after my parents but you don’t have emotionally, you don’t feel anything.  There’s no point.

DN: If I train you, would I like you looking after somebody I love?  And that’s always a good indication to me.

D: I’m happy now. I can go out and get the career that I’ve always wanted. To help people and help the community. Inter Care makes the transition such a breeze. It’s amazing.

S: For anyone that’s contemplating studying I certainly would say, go for it. You have the best support and the advice that I would give is certainly just give it a go. You won’t be disappointed.

Course Requirements

This course has the following entry Requirements:

  • Completion of: CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) or
  • Completion of: CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) or
  • Completion of: CHC30408 Certificate III in Disability PLUS the CHCSS00125 Entry to Certificate IV in Disability Support Skill Set

and

Evidence of the following is required BEFORE work placement (hands-on industry experience) can be undertaken:

  • National Police Check – For detailed information on the fees applicable, please refer to our ‘Fee Schedule‘.
  • National Working with Children Check – The cost of obtaining a Working with Children’s Check varies across different states. For detailed information on the fees applicable in your state, please refer to our course fees page. This can be organised via your State based authority responsible for issuing and providing the Working with Children Check Service.
  • NDIS Worker Check – For detailed information on the fees applicable, please refer to our ‘Fee Schedule‘.
  • Vaccinations – Evidence of some vaccinations is also a requirement including but not limited to influenza (flu) vaccination, and 3 COVID vaccinations prior to the placement component

Why has this change happened?

Qualifications are superseded to ensure that the qualification reflects the most current skill needs of the relevant industry.

How will this impact me if I want to enter the Disability industry?

  • The structure of the updated qualifications provides a clear pathway from the Certificate III to the Certificate IV qualifications
  • You will need to complete a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability)  first, as this will provide you with the underpinning knowledge needed to enter the market
  • Certificate III has become an entry requirement and will offer you a pathway into Certificate IV. Continuing yours studies with Certificate IV in Disability, you will build on your Certificate III skills and knowledge and take on more advanced units of competency within these Certificate IV qualifications to either advance your skills in providing care and support OR in the areas of leadership and supervision

What are the benefits of these updates?

  • Units of competency have been updated, and in some cases newly developed, to align with the requirements of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Workforce Capability Framework and the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, whilst maintaining the scope of job role for a Personal Care Worker at Certificate III or Certificate IV level
  • Changes and updates to the industry have been expected due to changes in industry expectations, Government Policy and Legislation, the Royal Commission investigations and of course, the impact of COVID to our vulnerable communities (such as aged, disability and community care)
  • The update to the Community Services – CHC training package, focuses on the alignment of qualifications with key job roles, across industry, and to address industry growth and credibility. In the coming years, the update aims to improve the standards of professionalism, customer care and service, and strengthen job roles within different Community Services sectors

Working With Children’s (WWC) Check required
This can be organised via your State based authority responsible for issuing and providing the Working with Children check Service.
NDIS Worker Screening Check
This can be organised via your State based authority responsible for issuing and providing the NDIS Worker Screening check Service.
Minimum age requirement
Must be older than 18 years to enrol (note: Police Checks are unable to be requested for individuals aged lower than 16 years)

Work Placement

Bring your learning to life by applying what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-world settings. Every qualification at InterCare includes a work placement. Our goal is to ensure you’re equipped with practical skills and knowledge that perfectly match industry standards.

Our Work Placement Process:

  1. Student placement will be organised on behalf of the Student by InterCare Training
  2. The Student will be allocated work placement within a 1-hour radius of the course location (public transport is not taken into consideration within this timing)
  3. Student work placement is non-negotiable and must be completed within a 3 week period Monday to Friday. No weekend work is required
  4. We work closely with our industry partners to make student’s work placement as seamless as possible

Current clear Police Check Required
Our industry partners require a clean police check for us to place you for work placement. If you have concerns regarding your police check, please raise this before enrolment so we can advise if this may impact your ability to complete the qualification.

Pathways to Employment

Courses Stages

1. Theory

We have easy to follow course activities and training. You’ll be supported and learn from teachers who care, are industry experts and we offer real hands-on experience during our courses.
  • Core unit theory and essential knowledge component is delivered in the classroom or via zoom (virtual class)
  • The practical skills will be developed through dedicated lab days and practical simulations under supervision over a specified period of time

Assessment

  • Demonstration of knowledge through written answers and projects
  • Demonstration of practical skills during simulated practice and assessment
  • Demonstration of workplace skills and knowledge through practical placement based around workplace activities

2. Work placement

We arrange placement for you
120 hours: 7am to 3pm
Typically 3 week period
  • The practical skills will be developed on the job during the placement component with a Disability Provider under supervision over a specified period of time
  • Assessment of practical skills will be assessed during the placement component by an Intercare Assessor.

3. Support & post-placement review

Government Funding

Explore the process of obtaining government funding in Australia by understanding the eligibility criteria. Meeting these specified standards could result in a significant subsidy of your course fees through government assistance.

The student will no longer be eligible for a government-subsidised training place under a program once they complete the qualification level targeted through the program.

  3. Complete the language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment and the pre-training review (PTR)
  4. You will receive an email confirming all enrolment requirements have been met
  5. And, our friendly staff will give you a call to allocate you to a suitable class, within one business day
