Training Pathways

Career Start offers two flexible pathways to suit your situation:

General Training Pathway

For individuals who are not currently employed as an apprentice or trainee. This pathway provides reduced-cost entry-level training to help you gain the skills needed for work.

To be eligible, the student must meet the below eligibility criteria:

  • be aged 15 years or older, and no longer in school
  • permanently live in Queensland
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with an eligible visa subclass
  • not already have a certificate III or higher qualification completed within the last 10 years (qualifications completed as a school student, and foundation skills qualifications don’t count)
  • not be enrolled in another qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, whether funded by us (Department of Trade, Employment and Training) or not (foundation skills qualification don’t count).

Along with the eligibility criteria above, specific entry requirements or exemptions may apply to certain funded qualifications and skill sets. These are set by industry or sector requirements, as well as national training package guidelines.

Traineeship or Apprenticeship Pathway

For individuals already employed as an apprentice or trainee under a registered training contract. This pathway allows you to train while you earn, gaining practical experience and a nationally recognised qualification.

Eligibility includes:

  • Must be employed in Queensland as an apprentice or trainee under a registered training contract for a funded qualification.
  • If from overseas, must hold a visa that allows you to work in Australia.
  • Not currently enrolled in another qualification.
  • Not exceeded two government-funded apprenticeships/traineeships in the past 10 years (Career Start, Career Boost, and SATs included).
  • Funding is limited to one apprenticeship/traineeship at a time (if more than one contract is registered, the earliest start date applies if all eligibility criteria are met).

How Many Funded Training Places Can a student Access Under Career Start?

Under Career Start, you may access up to two funded training places, through one of the following options:

  • One Certificate III qualification under the general training pathway and one apprenticeship or traineeship.

Note: If you complete the apprenticeship/traineeship first, you cannot then access a Certificate III through the general training pathway.
  • Two apprenticeships or traineeships (at Certificate II or III level, including school-based apprenticeships and traineeships).
  • For more information please visit the QLD Gov website. All eligible students are required to pay a Student Co-Contribution fee. Please refer to our Fee Schedule for more details about Student Co-Contribution

** Please Note: As part of receiving a subsidised training place, students may be asked to complete a DTET survey.

Can I access Career Start if I hold an overseas qualification?

Yes, you can access the Career Start program in Queensland if you hold an overseas qualification, provided you still meet the specific residency, visa, and qualification-level requirements.

In order to access the State Government Funding all students must meet all the eligibility criteria to undertake the government subsidised training. If you have an overseas qualification that is recognised in Australia as meeting the registration or licensing requirements for the occupation then you may be deemed not eligible to access the Career Start Program.

Please contact us to discuss your overseas qualification and to assess your eligibility for government funding.
