- Not completed a Certificate III or higher-level qualification in the last 10 years (qualifications completed at school and foundation skills don’t count).
- May be subject to specific entry requirements or exemptions depending on the qualification and industry.
2. Traineeship or Apprenticeship Pathway
For individuals already employed as an apprentice or trainee under a registered training contract. This pathway allows you to train while you earn, gaining practical experience and a nationally recognised qualification.

- If from overseas, must hold a visa that allows you to work in Australia.
- Not currently enrolled in another qualification.
- Not exceeded two government-funded apprenticeships/traineeships in the past 10 years (Career Start, Career Boost, and SATs included).
- Funding is limited to one apprenticeship/traineeship at a time (if more than one contract is registered, the earliest start date applies if all eligibility criteria are met).
How Many Funded Training Places Can a student Access Under Career Start?
Under Career Start, you may access up to two funded training places, through one of the following options:
For more information please visit the QLD Gov website. All eligible students are required to pay a Student Co-Contribution fee. Please refer to our Fee Schedule for more details about Student Co-Contribution
** Please Note: As part of receiving a subsidised training place, students may be asked to complete a DTET survey.
Can I access the Career Start if I hold an overseas qualification?
In order to access the State Government Funding all students must meet all the eligibility criteria to undertake the government subsidised training.
The pre-qualified supplier must make an informed decision about the overseas qualification and if this you would be able to gain or qualify for your desired employment in the state of Queensland.
The pre-qualified supplier must document their reasons for the evaluation and must be able to present this at time of an audit.
If you have an overseas qualification that is recognised in Australia as meeting the registration or licensing requirements for the occupation then you would be deemed not eligible to access Career Start.
If the you hold an overseas qualification that does not meet Australian Qualifications Framework Standards you may be eligible to access the Career Start equivalent qualification or study in a different area if your considering a career change.
